untitled

A compact short coupled horse the Spanish Barb of today averages 14.2 to 15 hands tall and from 900 to 1100 lbs. They have straight to convex heads with broad foreheads and ears that hook at the tip. They generally have crested neck even in the mares and have sloping shoulders that aid in their smooth gaits. Some are even laterally gaited like their cousins in Central and South America the Paso Finos and Peruvian Pasos. They have short sturdy backs, short oval cannons and extremely hard hooves and many go their entire lives without ever being shod. Their chestnuts are either small or not present and their legs have rather light feathering that turns in. They are generally "one person" horses and are not "push button" horses. They are loyal to a fault but will not tolerate any abuse. Praise and reward go a along way with these horses and any harsh treatment will loose you their trust.

Brought to the Americas from Spain by the Conquistadores, the Spanish Barb of today represents the Spanish horse BEFORE the development of the Andalusian. It is the original War Horse. Its strength and stamina made it ideal to carry a conquering army or an exploring adventurer. All the manuevers of Haute Ecole were originated on the ancestors of the horses we have here in America. They exist like this no where else in the world. They ran free on the American Ranges and in Native American herds. Small pockets of them were kept pure on private ranches too. The Cowboy and all his methods were made possible by the abilities of this horse. The Native Americans used these horses as did the original Pony Express. The US Calvalry found them selves out classed by these horses and they began an extermination program the results of which are felt today in the small numbers we now have left.

BELLS SPANISH BARBS

We are located in Greenville TX about 45mi. North East of Dallas.

We have been raising and training Spanish Barbs for over 10 years now and in that time have learned a lot. We are very dedicated to preserving these wonderful horses for the future and believe that the more people get to see what these horses are capable of; the more they learn about their history and how they helped shape America; the more they see how these horses helped create all the other North American breeds then the more they will see what we see and want to be a part of it. These horses lent thread to the very fabric of the Americas. I could go on and on but why don't you click on on of our pages and let the horses speak for themselves
